The life and history of Portsmouth has always been tied to the Elizabeth River and its ships. The Seaboard Railroad also played an important role, as well as the unseen railroad that secreted freedom seekers to ships heading north. This walking tour covers all this, as well as the general history of transportation in our region.

This reverent but lively stroll through Cedar Grove Cemetery and the lives of Portsmouth service members interred there, remembers their sacrifice and highlights their humanity with stories told by those who knew them best. with its combination of Portsmouth history and the ghosts that make it come to life
may be just the thing to wet your whistle until October rolls around!

Did you know the first African American double agent, James Armistead Lafayette operated in Portsmouth? That William "Billy" Flora, hero of the Battle of Great Bridge, was a business owner and well-respected citizen of Portsmouth? Or that Portsmouth was an important stop on the Underground Railroad? Meet the heroes and hear the history that influenced the lives of African Americans here in Tidewater.
See places occupied or visited by The Marquis de Lafayette, General Cornwallis, Benedict Arnold, Billy Flora, James Armistead Lafayette, Mark Twain, and Andrew Jackson. This walk tells the history of Olde Towne homes against the backdrop of the largest collection of standing period architecture between Alexandria and Charleston-with a smattering of bawdy tunes and colonial culture thrown in for your amusement.
